In the 1930’s Bayou Woods, Sherwood Forest and Pinewood Estates were where the wealthy of Houston came to play, ride horses and build their second homes. In the 1950’s Bayou Woods gave way to the development of large sprawling ranch-style homes on lots from a 1/2 acre or more. Today the upscale neighborhood of Bayou Woods is a blend of old and new construction.
Until the 1940s, the entire Memorial area was made up of farms and woodlands, and the tract we know as Creekside was part of a 100-acre spread owned by the Sauer family who ran a successful Hog Farm. In the 1940s developers turned their eyes to Memorial to convert it into a desirable residential area. Creekside Manor is made up of 68 homes on lots that range from 1/2-2/3’s of an acre and was eventually annexed to Hunters Creek Village.
Hunters Grove’s 53 homes are part of Hunters Creek Village. The lots average a 1/2 an acre. Sprawling ranch style homes were built in the 1960s and today it is a blend of gracious older homes and new construction.
Hunterwood is a neighborhood in Hunters Creek Village with approximately 64 homes. Started in the late 1960s and early 1970s these homesites are all on large lots ranging from 1/2-2/3 acre 64. Close to the shopping, dining and major thoroughfares make this is a desirable location.
Lakeview was started in the 1950s and has 109 homes. Nestled among mature trees the lots are 1/3 acre to just over 1/2 acre. Located close to City Center and Memorial City Mall this neighborhood is just minutes from life’s conveniences. Also convenient to I-10 and the Beltway.
Longwoods is nestled among mature trees and is made up of 54 homes on large lots at least 1/2 acre in size. The custom built homes were started in the 1950s. Conveniently located, close to the Galleria area and major thoroughfares.
Memorial Forest began in 1954 by two developers, Glen MacMillan, and Mr. Puig. The land was part of the Settegast Farm, which ran from Memorial to the Katy Road. Mr. Puig had a private water firm called Memorial Bend Utility Company, which supplied the water to the area until the City of Houston took over. Electric power was not available until 1955. In 1956 the City of Houston took in Memorial Forest. Today it is made up of 278 homes, many of them remodeled. Minutes from Town and Country Shopping area.
Pinewood Estates is a deed restricted residential community of approximately 80 homes which are built on large lots from 1/3 to just over an acre. It is conveniently located to many of the cultural, professional and shopping centers the city has to offer including downtown Houston and the Galleria area.
Riverbend is a neighborhood in Hunters Creek Village, with 67 custom homes started in the 1950s. Beautifully shaded lots are spacious ranging from 1/3 acre to just over 4 acres. Many homes have been updated and remodeled, some have been replaced with new construction. Close to the Galleria area and major thoroughfares make this upscale neighborhood very popular.
Rivercrest was created in 1946, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. This neighborhood originally totaled 367 acres with 95 estates. In the early 1950’s Rivercrest became part of the City of Houston. The first property owners in Rivercrest wanted to be able to keep horses, which allowed them to saddle up their horses, hitch up their buggies and maintain the simpler things in life.
Many of the original homes are being replaced by new construction varying in size from 3,000-20,000 sq ft. Some properties still have water wells and public sewer, but city water is available. The deed restrictions in Rivercrest solidly protect and maintain the minimum size of 3 acres for each property and no subdividing is allowed.
Sandalwood was started in the 1950s and is made up of 172 residences. There are 3 lakes where boating, fishing, and swimming are allowed. Located 12 miles from Downtown Houston, and just minutes from Town and Country shopping and dining make this upscale neighborhood very popular.
Sherwood Forest was originally subdivided in 1945 in a densely forested area near urban Houston, with ample wildlife and its own water source, when Memorial Drive was a small “country” lane. Today, Sherwood Forest is in the City of Houston, Spring Branch Independent School District, with large wooded lots and ravines. Being close to major Houston thoroughfares, Sherwood Forest is relatively short travel time to downtown and most areas of West Houston. The 119 homes have large lots ranging from 1/2 acre to 3 acres and are a blend of old and new construction.
Stablewood was owned by the Weiss family who built their weekend home and stables on the 76 acres. In the 1990’s it was developed into the first private, gated guarded subdivision in the Houston area and modeled after the tree-lined North and South Boulevards in Broad Acres. With 121 custom homes, this premier neighborhood is highly sought after. Conveniently located to major thoroughfares, shopping, and dining.

Included in the prestigious Memorial area of West Houston are four subdivisions on the south side of Interstate 10: Hedwig Village, Hunters Creek Village, Piney Point Village, and Bunker Hill Village. Memorial Houston is bounded on the south by Buffalo Bayou, on the north by the Katy Freeway (Interstate 10) on the east by 610 Loop and on the west by Beltway 8.
Memorial Village Guide
Found a few minutes west of Downtown Houston, Memorial Villages is a neighborhood of six independent villages: Bunker Hill, Hedwig, Hillshire, Hunter Creek, Piney Point, and Spring Valley Village.
The six independent villages of Memorial Villages are known for their small-town vibe. Bunker Hill, Hedwig, Hillshire, Hunter Creek, Piney Point, and Spring Valley Village all feature traditional-style homes (colonial homes built as far back as 1969), contemporary-style homes (with their minimalist architecture) and country-style homes sprawled across expansive estates.

Bunker Hill Village
Spring Branch Independent School District serves Bunker Hill Village. Two elementary schools, Bunker Hill Elementary School and Frostwood Elementary School are located in the city limits.
The Spring Branch Independent School District serves Hedwig Village. All Hedwig Village students go to Spring Branch Middle School and Memorial High School, found within the Village. Other nearby private schools include The Kinkaid School (Piney Point Village), The Monarch School (one campus in Houston and one campus in Hillshire Village; moving to a new Houston campus in 2008) and The Parish School.
Hunters Creek Village
Most of Hunters Creek Village lies north of the Buffalo Bayou; a Houston area served by the Spring Branch Independent School District. Students in Hunters Creek go to Spring Branch Middle School and Memorial High School, which are in nearby Hedwig Village. The Houston Independent School District serves the area south of Buffalo Bayou. HISD students attend Briargrove Elementary School, Grady Middle School, and Lee High School (students may attend Lamar High School or Westside High School instead).
Piney Point Village
Most of Piney Point Village is north of the Buffalo Bayou and served by Spring Branch Independent School District. Memorial Drive Elementary School is within the Piney Point Village boundaries. Memorial Drive students in SBISD attend Spring Branch Middle School and Memorial High School, both located within Hedwig Village.
The Houston Independent School District serves the portion south of Buffalo Bayou. HISD students are zoned to Emerson Elementary School, Revere Middle School, and Lee High School (students may attend Lamar High School or Westside High School instead.)
The Kinkaid School, a private K-12 school, is located in Piney Point Village too. St. Cecilia School, a K-8 Roman Catholic private school operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, is located in nearby Hedwig Village.
Spring Valley Village
The Spring Branch Independent School District serves Spring Valley. Spring Valley is zoned to Valley Oaks Elementary School in Houston, Spring Branch Middle School in Hedwig Village, and Memorial High School in Hedwig Village.
Memorial Houston, Texas Real Estate
The real estate offerings of Memorial are diverse with housing prices ranging from $400,000 – $7 million. Single-family detached homes in Piney Point Village range in price from approximately $800,000 to $4 million. Hunters Creek has nearly 100 subdivisions to choose from and most lots are at least a half-acre in size. Well-established property in this area sells between $1 million and $2 million. Memorial’s condominiums and townhouses built in the 1970s and 1980s are available starting from the low $100,000s. Larger, more modern units in the Houstonian Estates area can be found for more than $1 million. Prices start at $400,000 for comfortable homes built in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s. There are several construction styles to choose from: English, traditional, contemporary, and modern, to name a few. Many are within walking distance of a park or trail.
