The Texas Hill Country is known for many things: rolling hills, endless fields of bluebonnets, and the best barbecue in the world. Strangers to Central Texas may be surprised to find that some of the country’s best golf courses are nestled smack dab in the middle of the state.
In Austin, the self-proclaimed Live Music Capital of the World, you’ll find everything from plush resorts on the edge of town to eminently playable and affordable municipal courses just a chipshot away from downtown.
Charming old towns like Fredericksburg and New Braunfels dot the Central Texas map, where you’ll find lovely town squares and courthouses, authentic southern comfort food, brewpubs and wineries, and, of course, some of the most satisfying plays in Texas.
AUSTIN TX Golf Courses
Contents
The capital city is more than just great live music and a hip, laid-back culture; some of the best courses in the country are inside city limits. From the numerous 9- and 18-hole quick-play munis like class=”s2″>Lions and Roy Kizer to gorgeous resorts with luxurious stay-and-play packages at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa, Austin again and again proves to be one of the top golf destinations in the country.
Combining diverse topography, big-name designers like Tom Fazio and Robert Trent Jones, and affordable courses, Austin is the perfect setting for year-round golf. And thanks to GOLF Magazine, Austin can add, “The Best Golf City in America” to its list of titles. The Austin Golf Trail has assembled some of Austin’s finest golf courses for your next trip to one of the country’s premier golfing destinations.
BOERNE TX Golf Courses
A getaway for buddy trips and family outings alike, Tapatio Springs’ Resort Course is a major draw to this Hill Country town. Location is also the key for this German-settled spot: in Boerne, you’ll have easy access to both the surrounding Austin area and nearby San Antonio, for a completely different golfing experience altogether.
FREDERICKSBURG TX Golf Courses
From chic to shabby chic, this charming town is best known for the plethora of shopping options spread out across Fredericksburg’s more than 700 architecturally significant historic downtown buildings. Check out the local muni, a dog-leg-filled 18-hole course named after Lady Bird Johnson.
Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course
The $2 million renovation of the Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course comes with more extras than you’d expect, especially since your 19th hole is Fredericksburg!
With over 15 wineries in Fredericksburg and Gillespie County, you could spend days just sampling the award-winning varietals—including our cabernets, Tempranillos, viogniers, and Rieslings. Take in a wine tasting, barrel room tour, or simply stroll through the vineyard.
More of a beer aficionado, eh? Then visit our award-winning brewpub located right in the heart of Main Street, surrounded by over 150 boutiques offering sophisticated couture, home décor, antiques, and inspiring art of all kinds.
While visitors flock here during the spring to see nature’s magnificent wildflower display and to hike Enchanted Rock, this area is quickly becoming known for its resort-like aura with an abundance of luxurious and cozy lodging, numerous spas, scrumptious cuisine, wine bars, and over a dozen venues with live Texas music every Friday and Saturday. And we haven’t even mentioned the amazing museums or the dizzying amount of festivals that take place. With all this waiting at your 19.
Boot Ranch
You’ll savor every drive at Boot Ranch, ponder every approach, and contemplate each putt under the big skies of the Texas Hill Country. PGA legend Hal Sutton designed the course to complement – rather than confront – the scenic surroundings. More than simply a country club or championship course, the links at Boot Ranch are a celebration of the game itself. The Clubhouse Village provides sumptuous men’s and women’s locker rooms, a fabulous pro shop, and a variety of dining and entertainment venues to round out a day on the course.
PGA legend Hal Sutton designed the 18-hole Boot Ranch course with one thing in mind – to provide every player with a peak golf experience. Hal took full advantage of the existing contours of the property and created a course that rises and falls along the natural ridges and valleys. He also made full use of natural water features, one being the twin forty-foot waterfalls crashing down in front of the tenth green. The course measures an impressive 7,250 yards from the longest tee for a Par 71. Each hole offers an opportunity to hone a different aspect of your game and provides enduring memories and rewards over a lifetime of play.
HORSESHOE BAY RESORT Golf Courses
Horseshoe Bay Resort is Texas’ premier lake and golf resort. This 7,000-acre luxury resort lies along the panoramic shores of Lake LBJ in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Located just 45 minutes northwest of Austin, Texas, Horseshoe Bay Resort is the perfect place to play, relax, meet or entertain.
Ram Rock
Horseshoe Bay is a golfing jewel in the heart of Central Texas. With 3 courses there is something for all levels of players. Ram Rock will challenge the best players in the world. Waterfalls compliment the entire property. The Whitewater Putting Course is an absolute must-experience.
Apple Rock Golf Course, Horseshoe Bay
Apple Rock, Horseshoe Bay Resort’s third championship Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course, was completed in 1986 and received distinction as “Best New Resort Course” by Golf Digest. Widely known as one of the most scenic courses in the state, this spectacular course spans 147 acres of the rolling Texas Hill Country along the shores of Lake LBJ. Though not overly tight, this course still demands well-placed drives and accurate club selection.
Ramrock Golf Course, Horseshoe Bay Resort
Ram Rock was constructed in 1981 and is infamously known as the “Challenger”. Narrow fairways and rolling Crenshaw Bentgrass greens are surrounded by 62 deep bunkers, ten water hazards, and natural dry creeks on six holes. With its dramatic elevation changes, Ram Rock offers enough length and difficulty to challenge scratch players in any group. Ram Rock received a 4½ star rating from Golf Digest and was named as one of the top 15 courses in the state by Golfweek in 2006.
Slickrock Golf Course, Horseshoe Bay Resort
With multiple tees on every hole, more than 71 sand traps, and 12 water hazards, Slick Rock embodies the Robert Trent Jones, Sr. philosophy of “hard par, easy bogey.” Slick Rock is home to Horseshoe Bay Resort’s awe-inspiring “Million Dollar Hole” (No. 14) featuring a winding cart path that takes golfers on a ride through a waterfall that spans more than 35 yards and dumps more than 8,000 gallons of water into Slick Rock creek each minute.
Summit Rock Golf Course, Horseshoe Bay Resort
Horseshoe Bay Resort’s most exclusive course is known as the best new golf course in the United States (Ron Whitten of Golf Digest). It officially opened in October 2012 when Nicklaus himself, opened the course by playing a few holes in front of a large gallery. On the day, he played holes 10-13 shooting (-3) at the tender age of 72. The Nicklaus Signature course is some of the Golden Bear’s best work as the par 72 layout features scenic views and dramatic elevation changes.
NEW BRAUNFELS TX Golf Courses
Golfers near and far flock to The Bandit, a stay-and-play resort on the banks of Lake McQueenie. This quiet Texas town takes edible fare seriously, its German roots lending itself to an abundance of delicious beer, fine wines, and, of course, bratwurst.
SAN MARCOS TX Golf Courses
This college town is more than great Tex-Mex and has fun nightlife. Quail Creek Country Club is a fine 72-par play, replete with tidy Bermuda Greens and overgrown waste areas. For a quicker round, check out Texas State University’s par 34 9-holer, which can be played in 90 minutes.
WIMBERLEY TX Golf Courses
Just southwest of Austin you’ll find this friendly town bisected by the Blanco River, and filled to the brim with friendly folks. Enjoy a winery tour or float the river; either way, you’ll enjoy small-town Central Texas at its finest. The Quicksand at Woodcreek is here as well, a challenging, oak tree-lined 18-hole course.
Road Trips
It’s almost impossible to have a bad time out on the road in the Hill Country. Stretching west from Austin, the glistening lakes, rolling hills, and vast fields of bluebonnets of Central Texas provide the stunning backdrop to your Texas golf adventure. Inside city limits, play at any number of top-notch municipal courses, including the Hancock and Morris Williams golf courses. Country clubs like Balcones and Great Hills offer upscale options.
And then, just like that, once you leave Austin, the fun is just starting. On your way out to Vaaler Creek in Blanco, a stunning course replete with panoramic views of the Hill Country, stop off at the world-famous Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood. Don’t fill up too much, because, on the way back, you’ll want to travel the Dripping Wine Trail in Dripping Springs, where you’ll hit three of the state’s finest wineries as you unwind with some live music.
Have some extra time and a taste for the harder stuff on your way out due west of Austin? Stop off for a tour of Garrison Brothers Distillery, for a glass (or two!) of the finest bourbon in the state. Once you make it out west … just keep going. Comanche Trace offers championship golf on the Guadalupe River with unbelievable views. If you don’t opt for the stay-and-play out there in Kerrville, Fredericksburg offers seemingly infinite shopping, dining, and quaint bed-and-breakfast options for travelers.
Hyatt Lost Pines, located just east of Austin is a luxurious resort course geared to both outdoorsy types and those looking for a little pampering, located on the precipice of the 1,100-acre McKinney Roughs Nature Park. Explore 18 miles of hiking and equestrian trails, after a round at the Arthur Hills-designed, par-72 course that Golfweek named one of the “Best Resort Courses” for 2015.
