Eisenhower Park San Antonio

Eisenhower Park

Traveling to San Antonio is always a pleasure, thanks in part to the city’s vast range of parks, natural areas, and greenways. Eisenhower Park, located on the city’s north side, is a great place to spend a few hours strolling, hiking, and picnicking. There’s also an observation tower with spectacular views of San Antonio. It will soon be connected to the Leon Creek Greenway, allowing cyclists to conveniently pedal here from other sections of the city.

Eisenhower Park features around 300 acres and over 6 km of paths. None of the paths are particularly long; the longest is only 2.6 miles. However, by combining routes, you can walk/hike as far as you like! Another advantage of visiting Eisenhower Park is the diversity of walking/hiking terrains available, all of which are carefully designated so you know what’s coming. You can choose between relatively level, paved terrain (Level 1) and a rocky, mountainous ascent (Level 4), as well as others in between.

Hiking in Eisenhower Park

For those wishing for more off-road trail jogging, Eisenhower Park’s trails can be used for hiking and running. Because bikes are not permitted, the park is also ideal for those seeking less traffic and more peace and quiet than a normal city run would provide. There are a total of 5 miles of trails.

Eisenhower Park has a path system that is diametrically opposed. On the one hand, there are a number of paved trails that are better suitable for a family stroll or jogging than trekking. On the other side, there are various natural surface paths that can be challenging in places. Overall, most people will find something to enjoy about the park.

Paved trails are the easiest to navigate. These are marked in blue on the topo map to distinguish them from the more challenging natural surface routes. The Cedar Flats Trail, which runs thru the center of the park from the trailhead on the park’s eastern side to the park’s western end, is the most fascinating of the three paved paths. As the trail approaches the western boundary, some minor height dips give way to a steady rise.

A loop at the trail’s finish encircles a wooden observation deck perched atop one of the park’s highest points. There are a few decent views up here, but there would be far more if not for the quarry and high-tension electrical lines that run into downtown San Antonio.

Eisenhower Park boasts approximately 6 miles of well-maintained, well-marked trails with a variety of terrain You can pick between paved trails and “natural” trails with loose rocks, boulders, and logs to navigate. I hiked the Hillview Natural Trail (the most difficult because it is high and rocky), the Yucca Natural Trail (which is less hilly and rocky), the Shady Creek Trail (which has a modest elevation and is a shady path through the woods), and several of the paved paths such as Cedar Flats Trail (uphill paved trail, a direct route to observation tower).

The park has a modest playground, as well as a climbing wall. A hilltop observation tower accessible through the paved Cedar Flats Trail or the unpaved Hillview Natural Trail Climbing the tower provides visitors with 360-degree views of both downtown San Antonio and the surrounding surroundings.

Plan Your Visit

Wear appropriate walking shoes and a hat (for protection from the sun).
If you intend to hike the rough and rugged Hillview Natural Trail, bring trekking poles (if you have them).

While hiking, the All Trails app (free) can be useful. It helps me figure out how far I am on a path and where I am in relation to other trails.
Bring plenty of water with you (and maybe snacks, too). There are no food stands.

Near the parking area, there are restrooms, picnic tables, and a small playground. The paths do not have any amenities.

Keep to the trails. Visitors are warned at the trailhead that there may be coyotes, snakes, bobcats, and wild hogs on the site. The same signage encourages hiking with others, however, I did observe a lot of solitary hikers, including myself. (I’m thinking that wild animals are more active in the early morning and late afternoon, but I hiked in the late morning and felt comfortable.)

  • From 6:00 a.m. to sunset, the park is open.
  • Arrive early on weekends to avoid crowds. When there are fewer people, your time there is more enjoyable.
  • Wear sunblock and insect repellent.
  • On the trails, bicycles are not permitted.
  • There are no glass containers or alcohol permitted.
  • When you leave, take any trash you have with you!
